Guanella Pass Surprise Proposal Photos | Brenna and Alex

Guanella Pass Summertime Sunset Surprise Proposal Photos in the Colorado

Early in June, I traveled out to Guanella Pass to capture Alex’s surprise proposal to Brenna. Alex wanted to proposal somewhere not too far from Denver with beautiful mountain views and take Brenna to somewhere they had not explored together. I thought Guanella Pass would be perfect. When Alex researched it and saw photos of the area he was sold! The day of the proposal the weather was a little wild up at the pass. It was very windy and chilly that day. About 10 minutes before the proposal, it snowed for a few minutes. But upon their arrive to the location, the clouds parted for a beautiful sunset peak and made for a beautifully lit surprise proposal. Brenna was so overwhelmed and surprised by the moment and she said yes! After the proposal, we shifted into couples portraits. Like I mentioned before, it was very windy and cold so with lots of car breaks with the heater blasting and snuggly poses to keep each other warm, Breanna and Alex made it through the rest of their shoot! These were some of my all time favorite proposal photos. I could not get over how beautifully the sky was lit and the wind that day made for some very romantic windswept looking photos.

Guanella Pass is my favorite location with 360 mountain views within reasonable driving distance from Denver. Incase you don’t believe me, my husband and I eloped there for the views (see our photos here)! I may be a bit bias but its so great! It is about an hour drive from Denver (as long as traffic on I70 behaves) and there are SO many beautiful spots throughout the pass to take photos. My personal favorite spots are near one of the famous fourteeners Mt. Bierstadt. That area is a very open valley with scattered pine trees, amazing mountain views and a pond that can also make a great backdrop for photos. There are also two parking area in this area which make it easy for parking and through out the whole pass parking is pretty easy. No permit is needed for Guanella Pass (which is another plus)! Because of the high altitude of 11,670 ft, Guanella Pass gets some intense snow so the roads are open usually started Memorial Day and go through late October / early November which makes this a late spring through mid fall location so make if you want to do your photo shoot here to keep that in mind! Speaking of weather, it can be a bit unpredictable at Guanella Pass so make sure to bring lots of layers and clear umbrellas just incase.
